Thermal Mass Dynamics

Application of thermal mass dynamics

Thermal mass is the old fashion way of large masonary bodies acting as heat sink stabilizers. To work most efficiently, these large thermal mass structures would be insulated from conductive sources of heat or cold. In summer they are cool to start off (tile floors, large internal walls) and during the course of the day they start to aborb heat to reach a balance with their surroundings. This process would cool the room. During the night when the ambient air cools down, the walls slowly dissipate the heat collected during the warmer hours. In winter the opposite happens.

Electric and steam floor heating uses this technique effectively.
